Choosing the right ballet shoe make and size

 

Arabesque: Suitable for a narrow foot and slim ankle. Order one size larger than regular school shoe
Katz: Suitable for a medium foot. Order one size larger than regular school shoe
Capezio ‘Daisy’: Available in medium and wide. Cut generously on the width, but not on the length. Order one and a half sizes larger than regular school shoe
So Danca: A very generous cut shoe. Recommended for a wide to extra wide foot. Suitable for boys. Order one size larger than regular school shoe.
Sansha: Available in narrow, medium and wide. Used by professionals. Order same size as regular school shoe.

 

The ballet shoe is one of a dancer’s most significant tools. It provides support and comfort, builds strength and develops poise. It also allows the dancer to feel the floor.

For all of these reasons, the fit of a ballet shoe extremely important.


Making sure your ballet shoes fit properly

 

Firstly, make sure you are wearing the tights or socks that you use for dance whilst trying on the shoes.  Put both shoes on - there is no 'left' and 'right' shoe with ballet shoes so they can go on either foot - and stand up so that your weight is spread evenly over both feet. The shoes should fit snugly around the feet allowing the toes to spread comfortably. The end of the shoe should sit against the end of the longest toe. If you want 'growing room' you can allow a maximum of half a thumb's width of extra space at the end of the longest toe (any more than that will become dangerous for the dancer).
